Fire Safety Tips for Kids
Stay Safe at Home
- No Playing with Matches or Lighters: Don't touch matches or lighters. If you see them, tell a grown-up. These can start fires and are not toys.
- Stay Away from Hot Things: Keep away from the stove, heaters, and candles. They can burn you, so stay at least three big steps away.
- Use Safe Candles: Ask your parents to use candles with light bulbs instead of real flames. They are safer and can't start a fire if they fall.
What to Do if There's a Fire
- Smoke Alarms: Learn what the smoke alarm sounds like. If you hear it, it means there might be a fire, and you need to get out quickly.
- Have a Plan: Know two ways to get out of every room. Practice this with your family so you know what to do if there is a fire. Have a meeting spot outside where everyone can go if there's a fire.
- Check Doors: If you're in a room with the door closed and you think there’s a fire, feel the door with the back of your hand. If it’s hot, don’t open it. Use another way out.
Getting Out Safely
- Leave Right Away: If there's a fire, get out of the house quickly. Don't take anything with you and don't go back inside for any reason. Go to your safe meeting spot outside.
- Stay Low: If you see smoke, crawl on your hands and knees to get out. The air is cleaner down low, and it will help you breathe better
- Windows and Ladders: Know how to open windows and remove screens in case you need to use them to escape. Ask an adult to show you how.
Fun Learning
- Practice Fire Drills: Have fire drills at home like you do at school. Practice getting out safely with your family.
- Make it a Game: Play games that teach you about fire safety. For example, pretend to be blindfolded and find your way out of the house to practice what to do if there’s a lot of smoke.
- Sing Songs: Learn songs about fire safety. Singing can help you remember what to do in an emergency.
By following these simple tips, you can help keep yourself and your family safe from fires. Remember, fire safety is very important!
